B otulinum toxin, more commonly known as Botox, is a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It is used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles.

Botulinum toxin is sold commercially under the names:
ο Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA)
ο Dysport (AbobotulinumtoxinA)
ο Xeomin (IncobotulinumtoxinA)

At Simplistiq, we use Botox or Dysport for all botulinum toxin procedures.

What is Botulinum Toxin A(BTA)?

Botulinum Toxin A is also widely known by its brand names such as Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin. Botulinum Toxin A is used for muscle relaxation that can be used to prevent and also treat wrinkles.

What can Botox/Dysport be used for?

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Lower eyelid wrinkles
  • Eyebrow lift
  • Bunny and lip lines
  • Cobblestoned chin
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • Facial Slimming
  • Calf Contouring

How does it work?

Lines and wrinkles – Botox relaxes the muscles and prevents strong contractions at areas such as the forehead, corners of the eyes, frown lines etc. lines and wrinkles develop due to repeated creasing of the skin due to contraction. By relaxing muscle contractions, Botox reduces lines and wrinkles.

Dermalift – When diluted and injected into the dermal layer instead of the facial muscles, diluted botox, or more commonly Dysport, is use to cause tightening of the skin. When injected around specific regions of the face, it results in a tightening and lifting of the whole face.

Jaw reduction – Probably the most popular Botox procedure currently, jaw reduction works by relaxing the bulky lower jaw muscles with Botox. Once relaxed, the muscles start losing 20-30% of its bulk as it is less worked. This happens over 4-6 weeks to achieve a sharper, more feminine face.

Body contouring – calf reduction and contouring can be achieved with Botox similar to jaw reduction by relaxing calf muscles. A slimmer, more contoured calf can be achieved within 4 weeks.

Oil control and pore reduction – Botox when used superficially on facial skin stops oil production and tighten pores by inhibiting the signals to the oil glands. Skin is also tightened superficially and results in smaller pores.

Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) and body odour treatments – Botox/Dysport injections can also be used to inhibit the production of sweat at the underarms or palms of our hands. People suffering from sweaty palms or body odour from underarms can be treated with Botox effectively.

How is the procedure performed?

Botulinum Toxin A is administered into the muscle or skin through very tiny injections. The procedures usually take 15mins or less. Numbing cream can be applied in some cases to make the procedures pain-free.

Is it painful?

Needles used for Botox injections are extremely small and thin. Numbing cream is usually applied over the area and hardly anything is felt during the injection.

How long does it last?

Botox results on the face usually last for about 6 months. Botox results for excessive sweating usually last for up to 12 months.

Is there downtime?

There is minimal to no downtime except for very small injection points that disappear quickly. Slight bruises might occur with more sensitive skin.

Are there any long term side-effects?

With Botox, there are no long term side effects. Temporary side effects might be loss of facial expressions or asymmetrical faces due to inexperienced or incorrect injections. Therefore, always make sure you choose a certified medical clinic and an experienced doctor.

When should I get my first botox?

For lines and wrinkles, starting early gives the benefits of delaying wrinkle formation in the future. I would recommend starting preventive Botox from your late twenties or early thirties onwards.

For jaw reduction, the sooner you start the faster and more prolonged results can be. For some, after 3-4 repeated jaw reduction 5-6 months apart, results become semi-permanent!

How much Botox/Dysport do I need?

Will my skin sag or get worse after the effects wear off?

No, your face will not sag or get worse after the effects wear off.

In fact, Botox is the perfect solution to delay aging and wrinkle formation. When used accurately, Botox reduces facial muscle contractions. These muscle contracts are responsible for the wrinkling of our skin and repeated contractions cause permanent wrinkles and lines.

With Botox, these contractions are reduced and relaxed and results in delaying the formation of lines. Botox works best as a preventive measure for lines and wrinkles, rather than a cure!

Will my face be ‘frozen’?

With new injection techniques such as the Dermalift, coupled with controlled injections, your face does not need to be frozen to not have any wrinkles. In fact, at Simplistiq, Dr Tan emphasises on reducing wrinkles yet still maintaining facial expressions. Be sure to go to an experienced injector so as to avoid having a ‘frozen’ face or unwanted side-effects.

So why do it with us?
